Brown Rat

Rattus norvegicus

Risk

High

Peak season · All year

Heavier and bolder than a mouse. Burrows near water, drains and compost.

Signs

  • Droppings about 12 mm long, often in groups
  • Burrows near paths, decking or the compost heap
  • Dark grease marks along walls where they run
  • Gnawed cables or wood

Prevention

  • Keep bins closed and compost in a sealed bin
  • Clear fallen fruit and bird seed from the ground
  • Repair broken drain covers and airbricks
  • Cut back dense plants against the house

How we treat it

  • We trace burrows and drain routes before setting anything
  • Bait and traps sit in locked stations away from pets
  • Repairs and a written report of where the rats got in

Recommended treatment

We find how mice and rats get in, seal it, and set a monitored trap line.
