Grey Squirrel

Sciurus carolinensis

Risk

Medium

Peak season · Sep–Feb

Agile climber that nests in lofts over winter and chews what it finds.

Signs

  • Scurrying and thumping in the loft at dawn and dusk
  • Chewed roof edges, vents or soffits
  • Shredded insulation and nesting material
  • Gnawed cables in the roof space

Prevention

  • Cut back branches within 2 m of the roof
  • Cap chimneys and fit mesh over vents
  • Keep bird feeders away from the house walls

How we treat it

  • One-way exits so squirrels leave on their own
  • Opening sealed with steel mesh once the loft is empty
  • A follow-up visit before the last gap is closed

Recommended treatment

Humane removal and proofing for squirrels, birds and bats where the law allows.
